Through a small, supportive learning group become a strong competitor!

The American Mathematics Competition (AMC) is one of the most prestigious middle and high school math competitions in the USA and in the world. This competition is an excellent way for students to develop their problem solving skills, and serves as an entry point for those aspiring to compete in national and international math competitions.

This course will focus on the main topics of the AMC 8 / AMC 10 competitions:

I. Algebra and Number Theory
II. Geometry
III. Counting and Probability.

Several weeks will be dedicated to each of these topics. Each live session will start with a review of the core results that will be used that day, then we will work together problems grouped around various mathematical ideas and techniques. There will be optional weekly homework assignments, which will be discussed in detail on the class message board.

This course is ideal for students grades VI-X who have a strong foundation in Algebra I and Geometry.
Meet the instructor

Dr. Remus Nicoara

Remus earned his PhD in Mathematics from UCLA, and his Bachelor Degree from the University of Bucharest, Romania. He is currently a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee. His research is in the area of Operator Algebras, with applications to Quantum Information Theory.

Remus found his passion for mathematics in second grade in Romania, while training for math competitions. During middle school and high school he participated in many national and international math competitions. His accomplishments include two gold medals in the Romanian Mathematical Olympiad, with perfect scores, and a silver medal in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad.

Remus has over twenty years of teaching experience, which were recognized by several teaching and advising awards from the University of Tennessee. He also loves working with younger students, and during the past ten years he has taught math competition courses through the Art of Problem Solving, as well as in person courses for gifted high school students at the Governor’s School of Tennessee.

One of the defining aspects of Remus’s teaching style lies in creating a sense of community, excitement and contentment in the classroom. His students know that they are never alone when working on a problem, and this leads to mathematical confidence and open communication. To this goal, Remus maintains a relaxed atmosphere, while at the same time gently encouraging students to open up and express their questions and ideas.
